Kuki community protest started in April or even back to 2023 January. When CM goes for an inauguration of public park/ open gym. Kuki burned down that inauguration vanue. The protest of kuki started back before even the violence happened. Because there was a drive going on against drug and poppy cultivation. Kuki has a major stake in this plantation of poppy and distributing drugs all over India's state. And Manipur youth was in this drug addictions. And there was case of land encroachment by all the community even Meitei (Not particularly in hill area but valley regions) so , drive was going on for illegal land encroachment all over the Manipur. CM of Manipur is Meitei so , the Kuki take it as personal because their land has taken even though the land are forest reserve though, yes hills are land of Kuki and Naga but in the hilly area there is also a "RESERVE FOREST" which is protected by the government of Manipur. But this forest reserve are encroached by Kuki because they felt the entitlement of ownership of all the hill area in Manipur even though some of the forest or jungle are reserved (Under the control of Manipur Govt.) so, all these things felt personal to them. The statement made by the High court make them wild and started attacking Villages after Village.
